Russians Divided Over Madonna Concert
9/11/2006
While Madonna arrived this week at Moscow's Vnukovo-2 Airport,
Russian citizens debated the controversial singer's upcoming concert in
the city.
When the 48-year-old singer takes the stage at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium
Tuesday, it will not only mark the latest stop on Madonna's
"Confessions" tour, but also represent a change in the mindset of the
once-communist country, said the Los Angeles Times.
"If you look at the people who stand in lines to buy tickets for her
show, you may notice that a big majority of them are in their 30s and
40s," Russian journal commentator Boris Lifanovsky said. "Many of these
people undoubtedly represent the emerging middle class of Russia, and
this is also very indicative and very important. This is our first
generation of free-thinking, open-minded and independent people."
While the fact that the original venue for Madonna's Moscow concert sold
out in a mere three days indicates that the "Vogue" singer's popularity
in Russia has increased dramatically, but many there still look at her
on-stage antics as deplorable, the Times said.
"The United States first destroyed our great country, the Soviet Union,
then they destroyed our economy, and now they are sending this horrible
young woman to destroy our souls," protester Tatyana Myasoyedova told
the Times.
