MADONNA FESSES UP

01/01/2006

As confessions go, it was hardly earth shattering.

Asked what she'd missed in the 12 years since she last visited Japan, Madonna replied, "The heated toilet seats."

While in Tokyo last month to promote her chart-topping new Warner release, confessions on a Dancefloor, the Material Girl confided she's been away from Japan for far too long. She hinted that a tour was in the works for late summer. Here's what else she had to say:

On charges that her latest disc isn't very deep "I wanted to make a dance record. I don't think the songs are superficial. There's a lot of songs, especially towards the end, that are quite insightful and confessional."

On reports her hubby, director Guy Ritchie, hates her new single "My husband did not walk out of the room when he heard "Hung Up." That's a lie. He likes the song very much."

On winning Grammys "It's nice to get one, I'm not going to lie. But if I got upset for every award I didn't win, I'd be a sad and pathetic mess. I think people put too much emphasis on winning awards."

On being a controversial figure "I don't think that I'm so controversial. I like to ask questions, I like to challenge authority, and a lot of people perceive that as controversial."

On staying true to her beliefs without alienating the public "It's a fine line that I walk. On the one hand, I do want to inspire people to think outside the box ... But on the other hand, I want to be accessible, and I want to be able to reach a large group of people because I think I have a lot of things to say. I have to think long and hard before I make all of my decisions ... and then I have to believe in them, no matter what happens."
